Project Outline

Outline of the Project

Mitochondria are cellular organelles that serve as energy-producing factories within cells, producing approximately 95% of the energy (ATP) necessary to sustain life. When mitochondrial function is impaired, ATP production is declined, leading to cause systemic organ damage such as deafness, sarcopenia, ALS, and Parkinson's disease. Mitochondria have also been reported to be associated with intestinal microflora. In addition, there is currently no easy way to evaluate mitochondrial function. Furthermore, there are still no established diets, exercises, or medications to improve mitochondrial function. Thus, this research aims to capture all the signals in the body that are related to mitochondria. Then, we aim to create a society where healthy longevity is achieved by early detection, intervention, and treatment of mitochondrial dysfunction in 2040.

Linkage between mitochondria and enterobacteria
MA-5 improves mitochondrial function

Research Goals

  • Establish therapeutic medicines not only for mitochondrial diseases but also for many other diseases in which mitochondrial function is impaired as a basis for disease progressions, such as deafness, sarcopenia, and Parkinson's disease.
  • Develop a sensor for mitochondrial function.
  • By linking sensor information with biomolecular information databases, we will establish personalized prevention and personalized medicine that provides rehabilitation, oral care, diet, and medication to prevent frailty.

Expected Research Results

Sensors and wearable sensors placed in the home will detect the decline in mitochondrial function that occurs with aging and provide the optimal diet and exercise for the individual, leading to a society where people can lead healthy lives free of frailty and disease (prevention).
Effective diagnosis and treatment methods for hearing loss, muscle weakness, cancer, cognitive impairment, and depression caused by mitochondrial dysfunction (medical care) will be provided.
